My latest Craigslist experiment (no, it’s really nothing like the other one) was… well, I’m not sure what it was designed to do. I’m not to the point of carrying out well-planned or remotely scientific experiments. I’m just posting different kinds of ads and seeing what happens.
The most recent one was two sentences and has received around 75 replies in the last 14 hours. Many of them are dickpix (which is my new favorite word), but of the faces I could see… wow. Most of these guys look like serial killers. Seriously. Anyway, I’m not about to post any of them, so you’re just going to have to take my word for it.
But here are some highlights. These are from the first and second ads; the most recent ad has inspired nothing blog-worthy. Everything has been “SWM here. Hit me back.” Anyway.
- OMG YOU ROCK. Picture of Lego man in turban attached.
- if u respond it will be very gratefull. Picture of guy in bubble bath attached.
- i cook better than most woman. Is he missing a comma, or did he misspell the word? I probably shouldn’t be so hard on people for typos, but this one amused me.
- Its refreshing to see someone else who recognizes that people need to be grammatically compatible. So he knows about commas, but not apostrophes? Well done. (Oh — the ad mentioned that my ideal person has an opinion on the Oxford comma. That’s why I’m snarking about commas here, and why he mentioned grammar.)
The second post included something like this: “Please know the following: how to put a sentence together, the names of your senators.”
- i have a dog. That was all the e-mail said. Dogs did not figure into my post at all, so I don’t know what this guy’s deal is.
- Any interest?????????? Attached a picture of him posing in front of a shiny new minivan. That was the entire response. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to take from that — perhaps he’s a car salesman, since there are several other shiny cars in the photo. Or he’s already got our kids named and hopes to drive them around in this van. Either way, I feel the gazillion responses I’ve gotten allow me to be a little discriminating and ignore this guy entirely.
- Another one-liner that consists of physical stats and a picture. Dude looks like Gene Hackman. A slightly younger Gene Hackman, but still. No, thanks. Even his list of physical stats was grammatically horrid. It’s called a space bar. Learn it and love it.
- I am a grammer guru who knows when it is ‘its’ and when its ‘it’s’. Clearly.
- I kant spel. I kant reed. And, I kant cum to terms with the psykoligist in the mirror. What about u??? Wumen wid kats are usually 2 piky. Is dis u??? I think he was trying to be funny. He failed.
Also, I want to know why half the doms who respond feel the need to go allcaps on my ass. “I am very DOM.” They never spell it out when they are capping it. It’s just DOM.
And then there is the guy who is offering me the position of empress. He owns Arabian horses and a glass house on the sand dunes. I don’t think my city even HAS sand dunes. Anyway, this guy’s jolly pirate nickname is, apparently, GLOBALPOWR. Not quite as good as “MetalGod5000,” but close. Though, if he really is building an empire, can I afford to turn him down? I’m biting my nails about this one, folks.
EDIT: Hilariously (to me), many people seem to have come across this post by googling GLOBALPOWR. I didn’t realize until recently that there was a flame war going on in the comments. Just as an FYI, all comments from people saying they support, know, or can vouch for this Ian guy actually ARE from this Ian guy. They all carry the same IP address, which matches the one Ian uses to post as himself. Nice try, Ian! Go away.

I’ve been following these adventures via the RSS feed to LiveJournal for a while, and after this latest post I find myself asking “why is she still doing this?”. At this point you seem to have proven what we all know which is that at least 95% of people replying to personal ads, especially on craigslist, are fools.
Anyway, my intention isn’t to denigrate your study but I’m curious about what your goals are.
That’s a good question, and something I’m still trying to figure out. There’s the obvious mockery. Maybe it makes me a bad person, but I do enjoy the mocking. I know some of my friends enjoy the mocking, and many of them have been after me to start this blog for ages now.
The other thing I’m after is… well. I’m having a difficult time with some things going on in my life right now, and posting ads and laughing at the responses is an enjoyable distraction.
But the ultimate goal is, believe it or not, to find someone. I don’t know if I can do it on Craigslist or alt.com or any of these other sites. I’m also somewhat hesitant to document the dates I go on, just in case something works out. I may start. Certainly I’ve been on some ridiculous dates since this started.
So, um. I’m not sure! Perhaps I will ask my dozen readers what they’d like to read about.
Your stories and commentary are funny, but you indicate that you also have a real purpose here. That raises the question of whether you have also received some responses that are interesting or promising. Have you? What or who have they been like?

I contacted globalpowr regarding probably the same job opportunity on craigslist back in September. I called and was a tad sketched out by this guy. He wouldn’t tell me anything about the position over the phone and was in a huge hurry. He asked that I call him back the next week and out of instinct I never did. If anyone actually met with this guy please post some information. This guy sounds like bad news.

This is crazy!! I just spoke to globalpowr about a job! I was so excited to get some work that I didn’t even ask him a bunch of questions. With hindsight i realize how hurried he was and he just hung up the phone after we spoke…which I thought was weird. He asked if I’d be interested in doing some legal research and take it from there. I just got the email from him with the research information. I’m supposed to call him now. I’m super nervous and weirded out. I googled his email address because I had no other info about him and found these craigslist posts talking about being dominate etc. Any comments?!

I had a phone interview with this guy, even after having researched his name and found these comments. I went into the call weirded out and left feeling a bit sick. That guy is a real piece of work. I kept telling him that I thought his position might be unethical and therefore I couldn’t work for him. He just told me that he thought I was just being contrary and that he was looking for someone like that. This was in between telling me about building bridges in Europe, famous ones, very expensive ones. Me: “Any websites where I could see them?” GLOBALPOWER: ‘No that’s a good idea though…’ This guys fascinates me and freaks me out so much that I have a google alert sent to my e-mail every month with that keyword. Please, anyone with information put it our there.

After law school I interviewed with and began to work for mr. globalpowr. I have found him to be one of the more straightforward and honest people I have ever met. I have learned a tremendous amount of real life application that I was not taught in law school. I have become aquainted with much of his life including his Arabian horses and for your information he has shown me the sand dunes you seem to doubt. Have you ever heard of the INDIANA DUNES? Try to remember our reputation is the most important thing we can own. You are in effect falsely stealing his. What does that make you?

Globalpowr ‘s name is Ian Braunstein and he is a con artist. He doesn’t live anywhere fancy (he lives in Homewood, IL), and he will try to rip you off for money. His story is somewhat consistent, but little things change–for example, sometimes his dog is a mastiff and sometimes it is a boxer. He might ask you to invest in something and then steal all of your money, or try to seduce you into giving it to him. He says he builds bridges and univerities, etc., but he can’t show potential investors proof of this past work. He also claims to be an investment banker, but doesn’t really know what it is. I am one of his female vicitims. He’s completely full of shit, ladies. Don’t listen to a word he says. If I hadn’t woken up sooner, I would have lost everything.
I guess I should have realized something was wrong when such a fantastic ‘cowboy-surfer turned international businessman’ was sending out generic emails to many many women.
I feel I owe the truth.
Globalpowr is a scam artist. I didn’t realize it when I started working for him. He’s asked me to do some unethical things–file lawsuits preemptively, try to get out of contracts, etc.
But the real reason I left was because he stopped paying me. That’s when I knew something was up. He started to offer to cut me in on his deals if I would forgoe salary now and then. At first I said OK. But then I realized that these deals were bogus, illegal/sketchy, or non-existent.
And, no, he doesn’t have Arabian horses. He told me to write that.
I have obviously quit since then, but don’t be suprised if another “Laurie” tries to write back saying this isn’t me or if Globalpowr writes saying I was a bad employee.

I ran across a listing for a research assistant on craig’s list and replied to it about a year ago. Ian emails me back and begins to have short phone conversations with me about the great company he owns that was involved in some international merger in Europe in the late 80s, etc etc. asking if i want a position in this firm. always in a hurry, wanting to meet in homewood and then at a local business instead of his “downtown firm,” voicemail always full, he seemed sort of fishy, but i agreed to it. luckily my mom decided he sounded too creepy to be a professional and insisted on driving with me. at the last minute, actually while driving there with my mom in the car, i decided against meeting with him.
good to know that i made the right decision. ill rememeber to trust my gut from now on. and my mom i guess =)

Not sure what you’re talking about, Ian. I have allowed every comment to go through, with only one exception, and as far as I could tell, that comment wasn’t one of yours. I didn’t publish it because it contained the names and home addresses of people other than the commenter, along with language urging people to go harass them. It was so poorly written that I couldn’t tell what those people had to do with you or with this situation. So, yeah, I hit the “decline” button.
Oh, I deleted a comment offering free ring-tones, too.
But I’ve allowed every one of your (Ian’s) comments to go through, under whatever name or IP address, so I’m a bit lost in regards to that last comment. I’m not always at my computer and I don’t approve things instantaneously (sometimes it takes weeks), but that’s the way these things go.
